10 Things I Wish I Knew Before I Started My Business – Part I
Are there things you wish you knew before you started your business?
And also valuable is the hind sight of others.
I was recently at a meeting of entrepreneurs with three featured speakers who spoke on the topic of “10 Things I Wish I Knew Before I Started My Business.”
This is part 1 of a 3-part blog post on this subject.
The first speaker is the executive director of a non-profit organization called In Joy Ministries. She did not give her website address and I couldn’t find it when searching for it. Nonetheless, there was a lot of value in what she said.
These are the 10 things she wishes she had known before starting her business:
1. My business is my testimony and my ministry.
Because of this, she had to learn to say no to things that would distract her from her business.
2. How I do anything is how I do everything.
Everything she does is a reflection on her and her business.
3. Trust is the greatest commodity.

4. The importance of empowering others.
She learned to make others in her company feel important.
5. Working in teams and training someone else to take my place.
She knew that she couldn’t do everything by herself and needed to put procedures in place so that the business wasn’t always dependent on her physically being there all the time.
6. You can only expect what you inspect.
She had to take the time to double check on the tasks that she asked her employees to do.
7. The importance of accountability.
She had to model accountability so that others would follow.
8. Fire is not a good hire.
She took her time in hiring the right people for her company.
9. The importance of constantly learning and investing in yourself.
She invested in tools and education so she could improve her business.
10. God and family are the most important priorities.
