5 Communication Lessons from a Mercedes SUV and Bushes
Several years ago I drove a brand new Mercedes SUV into some bushes.
And I survived.
And there was no damage to me or the others in the vehicle.
How and why did this happen you might ask? And what do communication lessons have to do with this experience?
I was testing driving this vehicle with my hubby and the car salesman to see if I would like to purchase this car in the future.
The salesman was excited to have someone to show the awesomeness of this bright and shiny Silver Mercedes. I could see the “kaching” in his eyes thinking that he had the sale, but little did he know that he would regret giving me this test drive.
What started as a relaxing little test drive turned out to be a somewhat scary experience for the three of us.
I was driving down the street as he enthusiastically pointed out the bells and whistles.
But that was short lived.
Why?
As I made a left turn circling the dead end near the dealership, he told me to drive through the bushes.
Okay, you got it buddy. I can do that.
Immediately there were shrieks of “Oh No, I didn’t say that! I meant order tramadol 50mg online drive up the curb NEAR the bushes!”
That’s not what I heard…Or did he really say it and I had selective hearing because my inner Lara Croft wanted a mini-adventure?
Either way, here are 5 quick communication lessons to be learned from that experience:
1. Say what you mean and mean what you say. Be intentional with your communication.
2. Improve your listening skills. Focus on listening and if applicable, repeat back what the other person said so you understood what was communicated. Ask questions.
3. If the other person misunderstood what you said, gently and politely reiterate what you had said.
4. As an extension of improving your listening skills, don’t be so concerned with what you are planning to say next. Be present.
5. Watch for body language cues. A crinkled brow, a look of confusion or crossed arms can tell you that you need to communicate differently.
So if you are ever test driving a vehicle and the salesperson tells you to drive through the bushes, get clarification.
What communication lessons can you pass along? I would love to hear them.
